Affiliated with the University of Toronto, SickKids Hospital (known more formally as the Hospital for Sick Children) is the largest children’s health center in Canada. The hospital emphasizes using research to improve children’s health and maintains a commitment to innovation.

Recently, SickKids became one of the first hospitals in Ontario to begin newborn screening to detect immune defects in the youngest babies. The hospital will serve as the primary screener for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare disease that affects 1 in 100,000 children globally. The disease hinders the body from fighting infections and can be fatal. SCID is curable if detected early enough, making the screening process highly valuable for parents and their newborns.
